Image of the month – September 2023

A pale yellow butterfly with light grey markings on its wings perches on pinky-purple aster blooms. The sun was low in the sky when the photo was taken, so the butterfly and asters look more golden than they would at other times of the day.

A cabbage white (Pieris rapae), a member of the family known as the whites-and-yellows, feeds on smooth blue asters (Symphyotrichum laeve) at sunset.
